BOLD STEP FORWARD FOR REGIONAL FOOTBALL AND NETBALL: ‘NORTHERN
FUTURES PROJECT’ RELEASES KEY RECOMMENDATIONS
The Central Rivers Leagues Board, with support from AFL Central Victoria, has today released the
recommendations of the Northern Futures Project (NFP), setting a bold course for a more sustainable
and competitive future for community football and netball in the region.
Following extensive consultation with clubs from both the Central Murray Football Netball League
(CMFNL) and the Golden Rivers Football Netball League (GRFNL), the NFP Steering Committee has
presented eight key recommendations designed to address declining participation and operational
challenges across both leagues.
Key recommendations include:
Concluding and celebrating the GRFNL in 2025, recognising its historic contribution to the region.
Encouraging GRFNL clubs to pursue sustainable futures through transfers to appropriate leagues.
Encouraging ALL clubs to explore amalgamation opportunities with neighbouring clubs.
Expanding the CMFNL by accepting capable and competitive clubs from GRFNL and/or other regions,
with minimum participation criteria applied to ALL clubs.
Exploring flexible competition models, including finals structure, home-and-away rounds, and CCSP
(Player Points and Player Payment Caps) policies, to support an expanded league.
Collaborative planning with AFL Central Victoria and surrounding leagues to manage transfers,
amalgamations and restructure proposals in a strategic and unified manner.
The recommendations come in response to widespread concerns around declining player numbers,
volunteer fatigue, and the viability of operating with reduced club numbers—particularly within the
GRFNL, which faces the prospect of operating with fewer than six clubs.
Northern Futures Project Committee Chair Stuart King stated:
“These recommendations aim to preserve the spirit of local footy and netball while ensuring we’re
building something viable and exciting for generations to come. Change is never easy, however the time
has come where decisive action must be taken."
The committee also noted that if no viable restructure is confirmed for 2026, the GRFNL may continue
with a transitional minimum four-club competition for 2026 only.
The Central Rivers Leagues Board acknowledges the valuable input from all clubs and stakeholders and
thanks the NFP Steering Committee for their dedication. Discussions will now continue with clubs and
AFL Central Victoria to refine and implement the most sustainable pathway forward.

The Saints and Blues will clash at Tooleybuc from 2.30pm.
There’s plenty of new faces in the Tooleybuc Manangatang team as the club hits back from a 2-14 run and 11th place on the ladder in last season’s 3SH-backed competition.
It’s a big test against the reigning premier.
Key recruits for the Saints include Tim Auckland, Trey Clark and Ethan Goldfinch from Tasmania.
Tooleybuc Manangatang has also signed midfielder Blake Grant who played for Kinborough in Tasmania and Southport Sharks in Queensland.
Others to watch in the red, white and black are Kwaby Boakye and Josh Williams.
The Troy Coates-coached Kerang welcomes gun ruckman Nick Lang who racked up more than 250 games with Kangaroo Flat.
A powerful line-up from Kerang is led by Josh Nitschke and includes Ryan Gillingham, Michael Dalrymple, Martin Kelly and Nicholas Pay.
The Blues will be without Bryce Curnow and Nick Stagg who have joined Sandhurst.
Mallee Eagles take on Lake Boga at Lalbert.
The Eagles will look to big games from the likes of Beau Bennett, Ayden Tessari, Toby Sheahan, Ethan Pinchen, Harry Allen and Zac O’Meara.
The Lake Boga attack will include David Gourdis who played four matches for Richmond and is a dual premiership player with Keilor.
A crucial match-up for Mallee will be who opposes former Essendon and Port Adelaide forward Angus Monfries.
Other players to watch for the Magpies include Jayden Lonergan, Ricky Wild, Lachlan Burns and Matt Taverna.
Tyntynder and Balranald do battle at Alan Garden Reserve in Swan Hill.
A 9-7 record meant Tyntynder finished last season in fourth place before a four-goal loss to Lake Boga in the elimination final.
Key players for Tyntynder include ruckman Hugh Broad, captain Elia Ware, Roy George in the centre, Isaiah Bull and Brock Storer in defence.
Balranald has named Jaxon and Jydon Neagle on the half-back line, Matthew Neagle as rover, Kobe Lloyd in the centre, and Ben Fuller at full-forward.
Nyah Nyah West United faces Koondrook Barham at Nyah.
The Koondrook Barham line-up includes ruckman Mitch Christensen from Huntly.
Other key players for the River Raiders are captain Patrick Goble, Kye Attwell, Colin McVeigh, Domenico Cirillo, and Jack Thrum.
Swan Hill has the bye.
The season kicked off Good Friday at Cohuna where Woorinen Tigers scored a 68-23 win against the Kangas.
Grand final rematch highlights season rematch
A REMATCH of last season’s grand finalists, Balranald and Kerang highlights Saturday’s start to the 3SH-backed senior footy competition in the Central Murray FNL.
Balranald will have home-ground advantage at Greenham Park when it tackles the reigning premier from 2.30pm.
The Jydon Neagle-coached Balranald includes Jaxon Neagle at centre half-back and Matt Neagle as ruck-rover.
Key players for the Kangaroos are Colin Andrews and Drew Lloyd in attack, rover Harrison Soraggi, Jack Salau and Toby Lay in defence.
A brilliant on-field leader and nine-time premiership winner with Kerang, Troy Coates is now non-playing coach of the Blues.
After being joint coach in Mount Pleasant’s premiership victory in the Heathcote DFNL in ’23, Adam Baird has made the move to Kerang.
Baird was part of four grand final wins with Golden Square in a remarkable era of 2009 to ’13.
He also earned the Michelsen Medal as the Bendigo FNL’s fairest and best in the 2019 season.
Baird joins a Blues’ line-up that includes ruckman Nick Lang, centreman and captain Josh Nitschke, ruck-rover Sam Heavyside and key forwards Archer Dibsdale and Caleb Nitschke.
Woorinen and Swan Hill clash in Tigers’ territory at Woorinen.
The Marcus Demaria-coached Woorinen was beaten in both of last September’s finals.
Talented on-baller Michael Herlihy is Swan Hill’s new senior coach.
After starring for the Eagles in the South Australia NFL, former Melbourne and Port Adelaide forward Jimmy Toumpas has joined Swan Hill.
Players to watch for the Swans include forward Kallen Heslop, Thomas Isma who has crossed from Woorinen, captain Luke Phelan, and Ned McKeown, son of Collingwood defender Ron McKeown.
Tooleybuc Manangatang is on home turf at Tooleybuc to take on Mallee Eagles.
Saints’ coach Dean Helmers will be keen to see Tooleybuc Manangatang rise from last year’s 10th placing.
The play of Johnathan Marsden at centre half-forward, Connor McDonald in the ruck, roving of Kai Kearns, and defensive work of Jackson Morris and Richard Wardle will be a key to the Saints chances.
Mallee Eagles are also determined to hit back from a 4-12 run last season.
The Brent Macleod-coached Eagles have gained former Richmond player Jayden Post who was named at centre half-forward.
Other key players for the Mallee include Zac O’Meara and Paul Davis on the half-back line, ruckman Jai Middleton and rover Beau Bennett.

A six-time premiership winner at Golden Square and Michelsen medallist, Jack Geary steps into senior coaching with the Kangas.
Geary is arguably one of the most decorated players in country Victorian football.
The Kangas’ coach was named at half-forward, but can be just as damaging ruck-roving or across the half-back line.
Stung by last year’s sixth placing, Cohuna Kangas are likely to make a strong rebound.
Cohuna’s charge is likely to be led by the likes of co-captains Jarrod Findlay and Joel Helman, Sam McGlone and former Elmore coach Dylan Friedberger.
The Kangas recruits include Golden Square premiership defender Will Lee, former Huntly coach Jayden Cordy, and Ryan Semmel, a multiple Cheatley medallist in his time with Huntly in the Heathcote DFNL.
Most challenging task for any of Koondrook-Barham’s players against Nyah Nyah West United will be taking on gun forward Brandyn Grenfell.
After kicking 303 goals across Marong’s premiership wins of ’22 and ’23, Grenfell has joined the NNWU Demons.
Scott Wood was named at full-back and Grenfell at full-forward for the opening round clash at Barham Recreation Reserve.
The Scott Callow-coached Koondrook Barham faces a daunting task against a Demons line-up which was 9-7 going into last year’s finals series and made it all the way to a preliminary final.
Key players for the River Raiders include Mitch Christensen, Reagan Hamilton, and co-captains Patrick Goble, Jack Shannon and Jack Thrum.
Billy Driscoll has made his way from Navarre to play for Koondrook Bahram.
Although Grenfell is the main target in attack, NNWU has plenty of goalkicking options through Riley Daniels, Darcy Butler and Jordan Iudica.
The Corey Daniels-coached Demons have Joel Campbell and Joel Walsh to lead the defence, and on-ball division of Blake Larkings, Ethan Saville and Dominic Gallo.
Lake Boga has the bye.
The Dean Helmers-coached Magpies will be home at Lake Boga Sports Club to face Balranald in round two.
