Moulamein walked into Saturday’s clash with Swan Hill knowing exactly what was at stake: win, and the door to CMFNL finals stays wide open; lose, and the dream dims. It was one of those winter days where the air bites a little, the crowd huddles close, and every kick feels heavier because it carries the weight of a season. And as fate would have it, this one went right down to the wire.

From the outset, the atmosphere around the ground felt different. You could sense the tension, the anticipation, the belief. The supporters clustered around the campfire, beers in hand, swapping predictions and nerves in equal measure. Moulamein people don’t just watch football — they live it, breathe it, and roar it into existence. On Saturday, they were at full volume.

The game itself was fabulous football, the kind that reminds you why country footy matters. Hard contests, fearless running, and moments of brilliance scattered across four quarters. Moulamein didn’t kick straight — not even close — but they kicked when it counted, and sometimes that’s the difference between heartbreak and hope.

I had two daughters with me, both of whom have grown up around football but never quite attached themselves to a team. That changed today. They fell head over heels for Moulamein — not just the colours, not just the noise, but the players who turned the game into theatre.

They were mesmerised by Charlie Bowes (26), whose work rate and composure made him look like he had the ball on a string. Matt Edwards (23) impressed them with his strength in the contest, the kind of player who refuses to take a backward step. Peter Constanzo (21) was all class, gliding across the turf with purpose. Billy Bowes (3) brought energy and spark, the type of footballer who makes you lean forward every time he’s near the ball. Thomas Worthley (67) played with heart and grit, and Jack Jones (69) — well, he was simply an

aerial machine. Every time the ball went high, the girls nudged me and said, “Here he goes again.”

And they weren’t the only ones turning heads. Xander Hartland (8) delivered a performance full of courage and clean ball use, repeatedly breaking lines when Moulamein needed momentum. Mark Drotsky (25) was a pillar of strength, winning contests that had no right to be won. William Doquille (5) played with maturity beyond his years, making smart decisions under pressure. Joshua Wills (19) was relentless, applying pressure that forced Swan Hill into mistakes at crucial moments. Together, they embodied what Moulamein football is all about — toughness, teamwork, and total commitment.

The match unfolded like a tug-of-war. Swan Hill came to play, and they weren’t intimidated by the Moulamein crowd or the stakes. They matched Moulamein’s intensity early, taking a narrow lead at quarter time: 22–17. The second quarter was a stalemate, both sides locked at 28 apiece, neither willing to blink.

The third term was where the nerves kicked in. Moulamein surged, lifting their pressure and finding cleaner ball movement. They pushed ahead to 43 points, but Swan Hill refused to go away, leading by just eleven points at 52. You could feel the tension ripple through the crowd — every kick, every tackle, every whistle amplified. Was it about to all fold up? Only time would tell, and the last quarter was a blinder.

The final quarter was pure theatre. Moulamein supporters were loud, desperate, hopeful. Swan Hill supporters were equally invested, sensing an upset. The ball pinged from end to end, mistakes creeping in as fatigue set in. Moulamein missed chances that could have sealed it early, but they kept fighting. They kept believing.

And when the siren finally sounded, Moulamein stood tall: 65–60. Not perfect, not polished, but brave. A win built on heart, teamwork, and refusal to let the season slip away.

Moulamein are finals bound, and they’re taking the whole town with them.

Games like this justify the club’s ascension into the CMFNL. They show that Moulamein belongs — not just as participants, but as genuine competitors capable of producing football that thrills, inspires, and unites a community. The move has been worth it, and days like Saturday prove it.

The supporters knew it too. As the players walked off, the cheers weren’t just for the win; they were for the fight, the character, the belief.

My daughters left the ground buzzing, already asking when the next game is. That’s the magic of football — one afternoon, one close contest, one team playing with heart, and suddenly you’ve won over new supporters for life.
